रतन टाटा यांचं निधन झालं. जवळपास १५६ वर्षांची परंपरा असलेल्या एका उद्योग समूहाला ज्यांनी खऱ्या अर्थाने एकविसाव्या शतकांत आणलं आणि 'टाटा' ही नाममुद्रा ज्यांनी जगभर नेली ती रतन टाटांनी.
बरं, हे सगळं करताना एखाद्या योगी माणसाची स्थितप्रज्ञताच ठेवायची ही टाटा समूहाची शिकवण पूर्णपणे अंगीकारायची हे खरंतर कठीण, पण ते रतन टाटांना जमलं.
रतन टाटांकडे टाटा समूहाची धुरा आलीच ती जेआरडींसारख्या एका अत्यंत प्रतिभाशाली उद्योजकाकडून. स्वातंत्र्यानंतर तत्कालीन सरकारांशी आणि 'लायसन्स राज'शी झगडा करत जेआरडीनी टाटा उद्योगाचे पंख विस्तारले, आणि ते पंख मधून मधून छाटण्याचे उद्योग त्या त्या वेळच्या सरकारने केले. योगायोग बघा की 'लायसन्स राज' संपायला आला आणि उदारीकरणाच्या उंबरठ्यावर असताना रतन टाटा टाटा समूहाचे अध्यक्ष झाले.
भारतीय उद्योगाच्या पायातल्या शृंखला गळून पडल्या, पण पुरेशी ताकद आलेली नसताना ऑलिंपिक्स स्पर्धेत उतरल्यावर जे होईल तशी काहीशी अवस्था भारतीय उद्योग जगाची झाली होती.
पण रतन टाटांना खऱ्या अर्थाने जागतिकरण, भारतीय मनांना कसं घडवेल याचा अंदाज होता, आणि भारतीय मनगटं जागतिक बाजारपेठ पेलायला कशी सक्षम आहेत हे देखील अचूक माहित होतं. त्यामुळे कॉफीपासून, हातातल्या घड्याळापर्यंत ते जगातील सगळ्यात मौल्यवान आयटी कंपनी टीसीएस बनवण्यापर्यंत ते ब्रिटिशांचा मानबिंदू असणारी जॅग्वार आणि लँड रोव्हर कंपनी ताब्यात घेण्यापर्यंत अनेक सीमोल्लंघने रतन टाटांनी साध्य केली.
स्वतःच छोटेखानी घर असावं हे प्रत्येक भारतीयाचं स्वप्न, हे हेरून टाटा हाऊसिंगची सुरुवात करणारे रतन टाटाच आणि प्रत्येक भारतीयाला परवडेल अशी 'नॅनो' गाडीच्या निर्मितीचं स्वप्न वास्तवात उतरवणारे टाटाच. टेटली, कोरस स्टील, जॅग्वार यासारखे आंतरराष्ट्रीय ब्रँड ताब्यात घेणाऱ्या रतन टाटांना, सामान्य भारतीय माणसाची नस पण अचूक माहित होती. सगळं उभारायचं पण तरीही कशातच गुंतून न पडता, निर्विकार रहायचं हे कोणाकडून शिकायचं असेल तर रतन टाटांकडूनच.
माझे आणि रतन टाटांचे व्यक्तिगत जिव्हाळ्याचे संबंध होते आणि मी एखादी कल्पना त्यांच्यापुढे मांडली आणि रतन टाटांनी त्याला प्रतिसाद दिला नाही असं कधीच झालं नाही. आम्ही मांडलेल्या महाराष्ट्राच्या विकास आराखड्याबाबत त्यांनी केलेल्या सूचना असोत की नाशिकमध्ये महाराष्ट्र नवनिर्माण सेनेच्या सत्तेच्या काळात उभारलेल्या 'बोटॅनिकल उद्याना'साठी सीएसआरमधून दिलेला निधी असो, त्यांचा माझ्याबद्दलचा आणि पक्षाबद्दलचा जिव्हाळा अनेकदा दिसून आला.
बोटॅनिकल उद्यानाच्या उभारणीच्या वेळेला, सुरुवातीला मंजूर झालेला निधी कमी पडला, पण कामाचा आवाका लक्षात घेऊन, आणि जीव ओतून आम्ही जे काम करत होतो ते पाहून त्यांनी कधीच निधीच्या बाबतीत हात आखडता घेतला नाही. इतकंच नाही ते उद्यान पूर्ण झाल्यावर, त्यांनी ते बघायला यावं अशी विनंती मी केली होती, ज्याला त्यांनी मान देऊन ते स्वतः नाशिकला आले होते.
रतन टाटांची अजून एक गोष्ट मला प्रचंड आवडायची ती म्हणजे त्यांचं श्वान प्रेम. आमच्यातली ही एक समानता. ताज हॉटेल समूहाच्या परिसरात असू देत की 'बॉंबे हाऊस' हे टाटा समूहाचं मुख्यालय, तिथे भटक्या श्वानांची पण उत्तम काळजी घेतली जायची. रतन टाटांच्या श्वान प्रेमाबद्दलचा एक किस्सा मी एके ठिकाणी वाचला होता. रतन टाटांना त्यांच्या दातृत्वाचा गौरव करणारा एक खूप मोठा सन्मान लंडनमधल्या बकिंगहॅम राजवाड्यात होणार होता. पण अगदी ऐनवेळेला त्यांनी त्यांचा कार्यक्रम रद्द केला कारण त्यांच्याकडच्या 'टॅंगो' आणि 'टिटो' या दोन श्वानांपैकी एक, खूप आजारी होता. रतन टाटांनी प्रिन्स चार्ल्स यांना कळवलं की अशा स्थितीत मी माझ्या श्वानांना सोडून येऊ शकत नाही. रतन टाटा माणूस म्हणून किती मोठे होते हे या उदाहरणातून जाणवतं.
आज मी एक ज्येष्ठ मित्र गमावला याचं दुःख आहेच, पण एकूणच भारताने कदाचित शेवटचा असा 'कर्तृत्ववान तरीही निर्लेप राहिलेला उद्योजक' गमावला, हे त्याहून मोठं दुःख.
छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांशी या जगात कोणाचीच तुलना होऊ शकत नाही. पण समर्थ रामदास स्वामींनी महाराजांचं वर्णन जसं अचूक केलं आहे तसं इतर कुठे आढळत नाही. त्यात त्यांनी महाराजांना 'श्रीमंत योगी' म्हणलं आहे, रतन टाटांबद्दल विचार करताना, 'श्रीमंत योगी' ही उपमा तंतोतंत पटते. पण श्रीमंत असून देखील त्यांनी आपल्या श्रीमंतीचा तमाशा कधी मांडला नाही. असा माणूस पुढच्या पिढयांना पहायला न मिळणं ही अधिक दुःखाची बाब.
रतन टाटांना माझी आणि महाराष्ट्र नवनिर्माण सेनेची भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजली.

Ratan Tata passes sway. Under his leadership, a 150 year old business group truly marked its way in to the 21st century and ‘Tata’ -the brand’ resonated its legacy to the world. The Tata Group foundation lies firm on neutrality and an all-inclusive culture that being the hallmark of Ratan Tata.
The genius of JRD Tata and his mantle was passed onto Ratan Tata. Just after independence, JRD had to fight a lot of battles against the ‘Licence Raj’ malpractices and government decision to nationalise Air India. He achieved all this by maintaining high ethical standards. Fortunately, the entry of Ratan Tata happened when these malpractices were on the mend and the ‘Licence raj’ was getting obliterated with a rising of the spirit of liberalisation.
The shackles of these evils were slowly dissipating however, the Indian industries were still reeling under the aftermath and were in a transitional phase.
Ratan Tata, an astute observer of the ‘world happenings’ and with a global perspective knew how the globalisation would affect our Indian minds and he was aware of the Indian sharp acumen and how capable they were in coping with the global market. Keeping this in mind, right from products like coffee, watches, the world reknowned IT company TCS, and the British pride Jaguar and Land Rover were gracefully taken over by his expertise.
Being an unparalleled visionary, he extended his arms to achieve every man’s dream of having a home by his housing schemes and by making an affordable car- Nano that was within the reach of every Indian. Amidst all this, one never saw him getting stuck with petty happenings. Rising above all hurdles and achieving was his trademark.
I was fortunate to have a very personal and close equation with Ratan Tata. It’s never happened that I have put up a proposal and he refused. When we presented him with our blue print for Maharashtra development, he chalked down important suggestions, his spontaneous assistance with his CSR funds for the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Nashik Botanical Garden and his affection towards me and my party will always be cherished.
The Botanical garden that was made in Nashik was the result of painstaking effort and perseverance on our part. Ratan Tata was a witness to this and though the initial funds released were not adequate, he graciously sanctioned more keeping the sincerity of our efforts and the magnitude of the work happening. On completion, he made a personal visit to the botanical garden.
Another aspect of Ratan Tata that is very heartwarming and that resonates with me is his love for dogs. Stray dogs are looked after and welcomed in all his premises, be it the Taj Mahal hotel or his office head quarters.
His love for dogs transcends his persona to a level beyond words.
Ratan Tata was to be felicitated at the Buckingham Palace for his unmatched philanthropy. However, at the very last moment, his pet dog took ill. He immediately called Prince Charles and conveyed his regrets as he couldn’t leave his ailing dog alone. This highlights what a a remarkable human being he was.
Today, I feel a sense of deep grief in having have lost a senior and dear friend but our country has lost a national icon. An irreparable loss.
